Waltham Windmill

We're working with the Waltham Windmill Trust to repair and restore the windmill back to full working condition. Our task started a few weeks ago with the fabrication of a temporary roof, which was completed in our workshop, predominantly by Steve.

This was then transported to Waltham and put together on site, ready for the next stage, the removal of the sails and cap.

The weather wasn't playing ball, with high winds, so one cancelled crane hire and a week later, we returned to Waltham to continue to project. The wind was so high, it actually suffered storm damage with the front petticoat boards blowing off, several left hanging as we lifted the cap down. This caused us to lose most of our prep time where we loosen the bolts. As you can imagine nothing came loose easily, Talie and Dan had to work extremely hard on both days. The sails were all finally removed on day 2, with the cap closely behind and then the temporary roof fitted.

The mill is now being surveyed for the start of it's repairs which include massive repairs to the fly frame, new fore and back oaks on three of the sails, new working uplongs which open and close the shutters and a whole host of repairs to the striking equipment which has almost worn through. The cap roof needs a good going over, there's issues in every area. Last but not least, brickwork repairs to the curb and then a full re paint.

Thanks to @taliesinwoolsey and @dan_the_artificer for their incredible efforts and to @chrisfrearphotographer and @lockwood1426 for capturing what we couldn't. As you can imagine it's not always easy to take photo's in the midst of completing complicated works involving cranes and access platforms.

Keep an eye out for updates on how the works are progressing!
