Tim was delighted to award Talie with two certificates in recognition of his Millwrighting achievements after completing his 5 year apprenticeship with Suffolk Millwright.
There are currently no nationally recognised qualifications in Milllwrighting, which led Tim Whiting, Principal Millwright to create something bespoke and fitting with Suffolk Millwrights high standards of craftmanship. We're hoping to use these certificates as a catalyst for working with others in the industry, to create a formally recognised framework for all Millwrights to work with and be able to award nationally recognised qualifications to apprentices.
Taliesin started working for Suffolk Millwright in 2019 after leaving his career as a tree surgeon. He has spent the last five years learning about the different types of mills, understanding and implementing the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (S.P.A.B) philosophy of repair, the principles of mill winding and striking machinery and going on to be able to take the lead role in large repair and restoration projects.
Talie enjoys working with the large pieces of timber, and all the mechanical components. He is able to turn his hand to any problem arising, whether it be wood, metal or machine based.

Taliesin remarked “It’s great to be recognised in this way, I really enjoy coming to work and the variety of projects I’m able to work on. I’ve benefitted greatly from Tim’s expertise over the years and am grateful to the Suffolk Millwright team for the opportunities I’ve been given. I have worked on a variety of projects, but my favourite has to be Sibsey Trader Mill”
We held a small celebration at the workshop, with a presentation of the certificates , and then took the time as a team, to toast not only Talie's achievements, but those of the whole team, making Suffolk Millwright what it is today.
Tim Whiting, gave a tear jerking speech, detailing Talie's journey to becoming a Millwright, and said “I’m delighted to be able to award these certificates to Talie, they are testament to his dedication over the past 5 years. Millwrighting is a complex but hugely rewarding industry to work in, and I’m determined to ensure it’s future. I hope that one day there may be recognised qualifications for others to follow in Taliesin’s footsteps.”
